People are angry at the media. The government is angry at the media. This is completely reasonable. The media is extremely annoying, in fact there has even almost been science about it. Some might even say being annoying is the whole point, but you should never listen to cartoonists.

Completely justified rage, good intentions and faster-than-light neutrinos aside for a moment, the one thing you can be absolutely sure of is that Einstein knew his stuff and there is no such thing as a privileged observer. What media regulation boils down to in the end is which inmates you trust most to run the asylum. The answer of course being “none of them”, which everybody kind of knows, but isn’t really practical, because then you’ve just got the internet, which is the big farty elephant in the whole argument room anyway.

Moaning about the media is the new black, though as the old black was shooting the messenger, things have improved a bit.

The point being, any enhancement of a government’s ability to shoot the messenger, even if it seems like a terrific idea at the time, is a really really really awful idea.

Of course I work in the media so I would say this, but it’s still true, though I would say that too.

No, seriously…

The one thing that everyone can agree on is that the best and most sensible course of action for the Labor Party and indeed for the country is for them to sort out their leadership difficulties today once and for all and then get on with the important business of running the country.

Ha ha ha ha etc.
