To rather recklessly paraphrase the Opposition leader, the history of Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan is pretty much “shit happened, shit is happening, shit will continue to happen”.
Whether our presence has increased, decreased, or simply altered the consistency and distribution of said faecal matter is of course a moot point, and I am neither well-informed or clever enough to tell, though I do suspect it’s highly dependent on exactly where you’re sitting. Anyway, it’s kept the Yanks happy which is probably the best you can hope for.
Anyway, you’ve got to pack up and go home at some stage, which is a surprisingly tricky business, probably best summed up by Jimmy Durante.
